Blog of the Week #2: Surreal Football

They're playing beach football around the corner

This week I’ve mostly been reading two things: Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo and the Surreal Football Blog. One is a tale of protracted revenge exacted by an innocent man subjected to punishment for a crime he did not commit, the other a saga of a learned writer relentlessly subjected to the crass opinions and thoughts of a readership he loathes and needs in equal proportions. The similarities are striking (sort of): I’ll let you work out which is which.

“So good, we don’t even need a niche”

Surreal is definitely the right word to describe this blog, but the articles here are insightful and interesting too, drawing on a wealth of writing talent, all pieced together by the peerlessly bitter Neil Isaacs. This guy is not shy when it comes to expressing his opinions and neither is he too tolerant of those who deign to disagree with him. The Surreal Football Twitter account declares to its followers: We cannot stress this enough. Please do not give us your opinions: we simply aren’t interested. This pretty much gets the point across nicely.

Football Flowcharts

Apart from the generally angry tone and large helpings of apparently reader-hating sentiment, there is some other quality stuff on offer here. Articles cover topics ranging from the Premier League to the history behind some of the greatest rivalries in the game. One of our favourite features is their nifty line in football flowcharts, such as this John Terry-centric offering about Chelsea’s transfer strategy. Very insightful.

Anyway happy reading readers, I’ll be back next Thursday with the best that football blogging has to offer.
